Instant messaging (IM) is an internet service that allows one user to communicate in realtime with other users using a common IM application. Some services, such as America Online (AOL), allow
voice messaging and file sharing.
IM use may affect employee productivity and can result in a significant drain on IT resources when, in an attempt to control IM use, the IT staff struggles
to identify which Instant Messaging applications are being used and by whom. When IM is used to send and receive files, not only can the resulting drain on bandwidth degrade network performance,
but the attached files themselves may include MMC that can pose a potentially serious security threat.
Recently, IM users have also been the victims of several worms that exploit vulnerabilities within the

provides a real-time view of network activity on IM usage. Real-Time Analyzer helps identify the specific computers involved, and the
overall impact of those IM applications.

allows administrators to see details of network usage by IM signature, user name, user group, department, and destination IP or host name. Explorer

Several IM clients tunnel over port 80 and use agent masking to gain unfiltered access. To
address this, Websense captures packets and dynamically updates signatures accordingly.
Manage IM Attachments - Websense Web Security Suite includes features to allow organizations to permit IM use, but prohibit the use of file transfers using IM. This enables
organizations to gain the business-related benefits of IM without the security risks of IM file attachments.
Websense Web Security Suite – Lockdown Edition provides all of the protection of the
Websense Web Security Suite along with additional protection at the desktop. Lockdown Edition blocks the launch of unauthorized IM applications on all desktops, even on laptops
when they are not connected to the network. As IM companies add new versions of the clients, the Websense Master Database is updated and customers get the application signatures automatically.
